How safe is Tunisia for holidays now?

In recent months, we have seen violence on our screens from across North Africa but while certain areas remain inaccessible, it is widely acknowledged that travel to Tunisia is largely very safe.

In neighbouring Libya, it is of course a very different story but it is rare for the violence to spread across the border but even on those scarce occasions when it does, these are generally isolated incidents that are kept well away from the tourist areas.

Tunisia was thrown into the public eye with the `Jasmine Revolution` in January 2011 and at the time it would certainly have been advisable to avoid the country at all costs. At this point in time however, the streets are much calmer and while you may find the odd demonstration in the capital Tunis, they are largely peaceful.

Essentially, Tunisians view any situation as one which the country alone needs to deal with and that`s why foreign visitors are rarely, if ever, involved in any unrest. Tourism is still seen as vital and therefore travellers are left in peace.

As with all countries, there are tips on staying safe in Tunisia but these aren`t necessarily exclusive to the country and on the whole, they are essentially common sense measures.

While it isn`t as imperative for women to dress inconspicuously in Tunisia as it is in some North African countries, you may prefer to dress as modestly as possible, while taking into account the high temperatures that you are likely to experience.

Additionally, some tourists have experienced problems with street vendors and have found their persistence to be quite remarkable and certainly an annoyance to say the least. It seems that if you ignore the traders they are likely to become annoyed themselves whereas an acknowledgement accompanied by a simple 'no, thank you`, gives you a better chance of being left alone.

Otherwise, remember to take all the basic precautions such as not keeping your valuables on show and travelling with as little cash as possible. Always stay with a group whenever possible and stay away from remote and isolated areas.

With a little care and a few precautions, Tunisia is safe and of course this is one of the most beautiful countries in the world so you will be glad that you took the decision to pay a visit.
